Deirdre Welborn has enjoyed a diverse musical career as a performer, music educator, voice teacher, and church musicianfor over 40 years. She is a tenured Associate Professor of Music at The South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University. She teaches applied voice in all majors including Vocal Performance, Worship, Commercial Music, and Musical Theater majors.
She also teaches Vocal Pedagogy 1 and 2, Class Voice for Non-Majors and serves as the Vocal Coordinator for the department. While at AU she worked to develop the Vocal Performance and Pedagogy track for undergraduates, and designed the class Vocal Pedagogy for Instrumental Music Education Majors which is now a requirement in that curriculum at the school.
She is passionate about vocal health and feels called to help singers and music teachers find their authentic voice and avoid vocal injury to be the best steward of their God-given gifts. She presents workshops and Master Classes on vocal pedagogy and vocal health in schools, community theater, and in churches for choirs and worship teams. She is an active Member of the Association for Body Mapping Education (ABME), training to be a licensed Body Mapping Educator. She has also studied as a singing voice specialist to aid students in singing rehabilitation. She has also presented on vocal pedagogy and taught masterclasses at conferences, including SCMEA, SCNATS and SCACDA. As a soprano, she enjoys performing as often as possible in solo classical recitals and cabaret, as an oratorio soloist, and in community theater.
Welborn’s voice students from her collegiate and private voice studios have consistently earned honors at the state, regional and national level at the National Association of Teachers of SingingAuditions (NATS) in classical, music theater, and commercial music categories. Most recently her student, Harper Krimm, won 2nd place in the NATS NSA Finals in the Lower College Commercial Music category. She greatly values her NATS membership, having been an active member since 1993 and has served as President, Vice-President, and District Governor of the SC Chapter. Her former students have performed on Broadway and in Regional Theater, are serving as Worship Leaders (including Chris Brown of Elevation Worship, an AU graduate), and teaching in public schools.
She received the Associate of Fine Arts in Music from Anderson College, the Bachelor of Music Education from Furman University, and the Master of Music from Westminster Choir College. Welborn attended The CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music) Institute at Shenandoah University and is a Level Three graduate of Somatic Voicework®-The LoVetriMethod.
Throughout her career, she has served both full time and part time as a music minister and still serves as a guest pianist for the main Chapel & Mercy Center, a faith-based, non-profit organization in Anderson, South Carolina, a church which works alongside those dealing with homelessness and poverty.
When she is not singing or talking about vocal pedagogy, she enjoys traveling, gardening, attending live concerts, weight lifting, and spending time with her family and her dog, Melody.
